  • Dutch Oven Cookbook

    Hi Everyone,

I am looking for a couple cookbooks for my dutch oven. I would really like to have a book that tells me how many briquetts to put on the top and bottom instead of telling me a temperature.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks for the help

    Dutch Oven Math!

    The Rule of 3's
Step 1- Take note of the size of your oven. (i.e. 12")
Step 2- Subtract 3 from the size (12-3=9) and add that many briquettes under your oven.
Step 3- Add 3 to the size (12+3=15) and add that many briquettes on top of your oven.

This will give you approximately 325 degrees in your oven.

To increase the temperature, add 1 briquette above and 1 below, for every additional 25 degrees needed.
To decrease the temperature, remove 1 briquette above and 1 below, for every 25 degrees less you need.

Usually, I cheat just a little...doesn't hurt because with cast iron, heat is spread evenly. It's very hard to over-cook in a DO. Sometimes also I'll also place extra briqueetes around the base of the pot. Dutch Oven is one of the easiest ways and best ways to cook camp food! We love it. On future campouts I'll be sharing a lot more recipes and photos too! Thanks for lookin!:D

Thanks for the info and the pictures!

Is that tin foil you are using to line the inside bottom?

Yep!....it saves time cleaning up. Most of the ingredients we did before we left. Once at the campsite...it's more of just reheating. Cast Iron is the way to go!

Sometimes, when we take more with us(food stuffs) and then thrown something together then the cleaning is a tad more intense! Thanks fer askin!

I'm trying to find all my dutch oven cookbooks. Here's 2 of them:
1)Camp Dutch Oven Cooking 101 from Backyard to Backwoods
compiled by Lodge Press. go to www.lodgemfg.com to order from them
2)Texas Treasury of Dutch Oven Cooking
compiled by the Lone Star Dutch Oven Society-I'm not sure where you can find it in your area. Bass Pro, if there's one near enough.
When I find my other dutch oven cookbooks, I will pass their titles along.

Chris...ya otta throw up more links. Folk interested in DO cooking will follow if you do the grunt work! I got plenty of recipes here myself, DO cookin is the greatest thing since man learned to cook stuff him or herself! Titles of books are cool but links are a better fit and then so are recipes, if ya take the time to work it out and describe the entire process. On some recipes I got photos shown every step, took alot of work, but in the end I'm talkin about 300 views of a recipe compared to 30 just passerbys. The idea is if you want share then share every step along the way! Don't be discouraged, the more time spent here the less time is spent doing stupid things like watchin the boob-tube! Concerning the TV...I haven't had one in my house for nearly 5 years! If I want to watch a ball game(baseball only) I'll go to a casino and check it out in the sportsbook! That's an added luxury fer living in Nevada, where gaming is legal!

He was asking about books, not links. I answered the question.

You're nearly there. I'm sure you'll find one! BTW.. the name is from a song I used to like back in the 90's called Near Wild Heaven. I've been using it for about 15 years.

The Boy Scouts have a few cookbook files on the US Scouts web site.
                          http://www.usscouts.org/cooking.asp
RenoDesertFox is correct, you have to adjust the number of coal for your size of oven. I've also seen some variation because of thickness or the weather.

Derek's first rule of camping is "try it at home first"
