I have a better idea: How about not "tossing" cigarette butts anywhere. It is your garbage. Throw it away properly.

Piles of cigarette butts in a fire pit are disgusting. No camper should have to show up at a campsite and find stinky wet cigarette butts in their fire pit. It is a fire pit, not a toilet, not a garbage can. This is supposed to be camping, not bar-fly crawling.

Agreed.

However, the reality of it is, it’s not gonna happen. For whatever reason, the practice of littering cigarette butts seems to have become accepted. I don’t smoke, but while I’ve got a fire going, as I do most of the time while I’m camping, I don’t have an issue with companions tossing their butts in the fire. I would be less perturbed to get to my site and have a couple of butts in the fire pit as opposed to scattered around the site.
