  • try anything different?

Just as an example.........I have Les Stroud's (survivorman) book.
In it he explains several different ways to make fire..........I would be interested to try these out, just for experience sake.

He lists a fire bow, the typical bent stick with a cord rotating a stick on another flat piece.

and the fire piston.........just put a bit of dry tinder on the end of the piston and quickly push/pull it in the cylinder.....

    and a magnesium striker..........

Anyone going to try these, or something else "out of the box"??

Yep, I have used my magnesium striker for years. If we happen into an organized setting like a campground, people often ask why a striker instead of a lighter or matches? A mag striker will work in any weather and it gives the impression to others that I'm a real out-of-doors-kind-a-guy. Matches can get wet, and if I can show people another way to make fire and I've have heard them say..."look there, there is a caveman making a fire." Ha Ha! I get a kick out of it anyways! Hope you try it this season OC, you'll be glad you gave it a try.

In a pinch, a 6V lantern battery and a bit of steelwool will start a fire - just be careful!

I have the magnesium bar with the striker rod in one edge - it works but needs practice.
I also have the USAF issue thumbwheel striker unit using a flint - like the mechanism of a Bic lighter. Comes in a plastic box with impregnated cotton tinder. Works great! I carry it in my Emergency Survival Kit.
Longtime Motorcycle Camper. Getting away from it all on two wheels!
