Speaking of magnesium bars, I recently came across this video about bad magnesium bars coming out of China. The original Doan's bars are good but many of the Chinese knockoffs contain little if any magnesium and wont' light.

That's good advice. You don't want to be learning how to use gear in an emergency, let alone figuring out if it works.

I have bic lighters in my pack,fanny pack, day pack etc.. also there is a bic in each of our cars. In really cold weather I still carry an old silver lighter that uses lighter fluid and a wick, it works every time, though it does need to have the flint and wick replaced from time to time and you have to fill it with lighter fluid when the resevoir cotton starts to dry out.
