  • Hiking Apps

My wife and I went on the first of what I hope is a weekly hiking trip. There are so many trails either in town or just out of town and it is such good exercise that IMO it is crazy not to take advantage.

Anyway, I found the Alltrails app and it seems pretty good but I was wondering what (if any) hiking apps you guys use and would recomend.

Not an app as much as just Googling for trails in the area you are visiting.

If you are on interstates in WV and in Ohio, there are some great paths right off the road -

Off I 77 (SC state line to Cleveland)

Off US 50 (which runs coast to coast)

We tried that this morning and liked the trail we found. The problem is that there are so many different trails in one area that it is hard to keep track of which fork we are suposed to take. With the app (idealy) I can just use the gps and there is more detailed info than I found on google.

I have never used this but just saw that Delorme has 2 apps for mobile phones, one for $29.95 and one for $39.95, that includes topo maps of N. America. I don't know how much detail they offer and they are pricey compared to usual apps but it might offer the information you are looking for.

James, after getting lost because the state park we were hiking in changed and remarked their trails. Nothing matched what was on the map the ranger gave us. We came upon others wondering around trying to find their way out. Lol. We when we asked about it he said maybe he should have told us. I think the rangers were bored and that is what they did for fun.
We downloaded Gaia GPS, it is easier to retrace your steps. We really like it. We can go online and map hikes we plan to take.
