I do not want you to feel old but now when we look back 50 years it is at our lifetime not our fathers .....
Fifty years ago, NASA announced the selection of the original seven Mercury astronauts: Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper, and Donald "Deke" Slayton. All seven were military test pilots.
The Mercury program spanned nearly five years, with six piloted missions. During that time, NASA achieved all of its goals for the project, which were to orbit a manned spacecraft around Earth; investigate a human's ability to function in space; and recover both pilot and spacecraft safely.
