  • Newbie Here with a question...

We are taking the family out for our first camping trip and want to make it as fun and stree free if possible. What do you do with young kids and middle of the night bathroom breaks?

We will be tent camping in a family campground but the bathrooms will be a bit of a walk at night. Does anyone bring a portable toilet for the tent or set up another tent for such things?

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

We bring a portable potty with us all the time. We keep it in out tent and have the room for it. It's a nice comfort to have in the middle of the night, when nature calls. But even if you don't have one and it's the middle of the night, you should be responsible enough and get out of the sack, get dressed and escort them to the bathroom. The deep dark night can be scary for young children, but with an adult along the feeling of security is ever present when an adult is with. When I was raising my children and they had to go, I was always the one to take them.

Before going to sleep at night, everyone should make that run to the campground bathroom and take care of business. Even now when it's just me and Desert Rose camping, what-ever the time of day it is and she wanted to go to the "head" I would stop doing whatever I was doing and walk with her.

    Here's a pic.

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry, I guess I should have clarified that we would of course take them to the facilities if they had to go and not set them loose in the dark on their own. My apologies, I thought as a parent that would be a given.

What I meant was for convenience, do you bring your own. I have been looking at the Lugable Loo with the bio hazard bags and that might just work for us to get through the night.

I apologize too, CEOMom, I mis-understood as well, a person can only relate to what is penned on the page and the question asked. Welcome to CF! Hope that your stay with us will be a happy experience. Thanks for being patient. There has been good replies to your question already.

Thanks, Hogsnapper...I'm not sure we are ready to invest in the Pett toilet just yet so I'm going with the Luggable Loo for now. Thanks for the feed back.

I camp occasionally with 5 kids/spouses and the better part of 10 grandkids. I have found that whether it is my wife or the rest of the family, they appreciate a sanitary toilet facility that is private and close by. Click image for larger version

This is my toilet tipi with the chemical toilet (which is the same as the one pictured by RDF in this thread).
They are easy to dump and clean. and comfortable to use.

X2 for the Lug a Loo. Have one for the exact reason you are speaking of. They make baggies that go in to control the waste odor etc.

Hi! New here too and this looks like as good a spot as any to chime in, lol.

I have a 2 room shower tent by Northwest Territories I got from Kmart and a Hassock I picked up from Fleet Farm. I will not go camping without these 2 items!! They have been a lifesaver for nighttime visits and for the small children who are too scared to go in an outhouse or camp bathroom otherwise.

Just wanted to check-in after our camping trip. The Lugable Loo worked perfectly for the family. We used Kitty Litter and 2 layers of thrash bags.

Thanks everyone for your input! I'll be staying around here for more tips.
