we use the round large Ozarka water bottles that have the indentations on the sides for gripping.
four of these bottles fit quite nicely into a square milk crate, and the crates can be stacked with ease.
the bottles can be refilled at any water station or the park water spigots. they don't quite hold 1 gallon,
I think they are 3 liter size. I have 8 bottles and am considering getting another 4 and another crate.
