  • base camp ideas

have been thinking of putting together my base camp in upstate NY.
there are lots of aspects to the camp,
wonder if i should break up thread for different questions or have it all here?
summary have 50 acres, 8 acres of which is set back bordering state lands.
will build my camp on that 8 acres,
about 1 mile from where i park the car,
1/2 distance is easy trek over abandoned railroad tracks,
1/2 distance tough trek through swamp and thick woods.

for the Tent structure looking at about 12'x 10' baker style tent, which is 1/2 a standard wall tent. dimensions still to be decided

materials, for wood i will use timber from the property for structure.
for the tent originally wanted Canvas,
but thinking heavy duty poly type material will be better,

    next project is water,
i can bring in water as needed, but whats the fun in that
thinking of filtering my water on site.
have lots of swamp water around, access to water is not an issue, making it drinkable is.
i have a small hand held pump filter, works great for hiking,
filter costs about $30 and lasts about 100 liters,

can also filter the nastiest stagnant swamp water and make it safe.
but dont think hiking katadyne is up to the task of useage at a base camp.
other options, buy a higher capacity system?$$$
    boil and store? time consuming
    tablets?
or filter my own, like to consider this option, just dont know how safe/reliable i can make it.
was gonna pick up some 8" pvc piping part of which i would use for food storage container, then rest of which i was thinking of using it as a water tank and/or turning it into a water filtration system,
bottom half holds water with a spigot of sorts, top half can use filter system, cotton/sand/charcoal, etc...,
fill top with nasty water, drinkable water at bottom?
have to think of this carefully as price for 8" pvc is alot more than expected, $10 per ft, and $20-$50 per cap/fitting price can climb quickly.

    am still putting together materials,
and hope to make my first trip to start building soon after easter.
other projects that will follow will be potty/shower, also a cook/cleaning station.
but that will come after tent is up.
this will also be a continuing project as plan to add/change it with each trip up.

    Re: base camp ideas

Concerning your question about moving this thread, no worries terasec, I will do it for you. And the reason is because you are sharing specific information concerning a form of tent camping. General Chat is not where this plan belongs. You will be moved shortly to Tent Camping sub-forum. Thank you for taking the time to share your camping base camp and also pleased as punch that when you're not camping you're at least chatting about it on CampingForums the best camping forum on the net!

      No prob Reno
this is an overhead of my land,
bottom 42 acres is too close to the road to camp,
sometimes people driving by see fire in the woods and report it,
have had cops come check me out on my land because someone saw a flame.
top 8 acres is very secluded
railroad track is abandoned and used as a snowmobile trail in winter,
trail on top of the property is a fire road, no vehicle access but allows me foot access to state lands.

        Thanks Hog,
        very helpful,
such filter elements can incorporate in any tank i build/buy, whether its bucket system or something else.
and like the 6000 gallon capacity.

          tent ideas
while browsing online for tarp material
          came across this for $75
wasnt thinking of heading in this direction but for $75 maybe worth as a start.

            Re: base camp ideas

I decided to go with my original idea of baker style tent using canvas,
            similar to this,
gonna stick to 10'x10' as was easiest to find tarp size to match without sewing,
was gonna look at water proofing it somewhat,
but may decide against it, and just soak it in a mold retardant.
if it gets wet when i am not there, no big deal,
if i am there can always use a tarp as a fly.
i have the canvas, will be adding the grommets shortly
total cost of canvas so far is $70 for 2 sheets of 12'x15'
