Every year thousands of people go camping in bear country and you almost never hear about people being attacked by bears. The last time I can remember hearing anything about someone being attacked by a bear was when Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend were killed by a brown bear in Alaska and that was back in 2003 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Treadwell

Treadwell and his girlfriend were killed by a grizzly bear - quite a different animal. It didn't help that he was a bit of a nutcase. He went deep into grizzly territory at the most dangerous time of year, when the bears were gearing up for Winter.

Yes, Treadwell put himself and his girlfriend into a bad situation. Many people have a fear of snakes but not too many people are bitten by them, it's usually the drunken fools who try to pick them up that get bit.

There are some tents that are attached on top of a roof rack on a truck or SUV. They seem to be safer than a tent mounted on the ground.
