  • Temple Bar, Lake Mead, Arizona

    Howdy,

If you are looking for a very quite retreat, close to a big city, less than one hour away, yet far enough away you feel like it's a different world look no further than Temple Bar on Lake Mead but in Arizona. Only thirty-five miles from Hoover Dam but with flush toilets and hot showers is a camper's dream. Houseboats for rent, or speed boats, or take your own kayak, you can be all by yourself but close to a night on the town if you are so inclined.

The camp ground has over 280 individual sites but in my life time of living in Las Vegas and camping in the fall and spring(too hot in the summer) I've only seen five or six other sites being used at one time. Solitude is king at Temple Bar. The locals there say that during the summer when the beach temperature is near 115 degrees there is a crowd of ten boaters trying to launch their boats here. What only ten boats, this place is heaven.

Augustus Bonelli, did not abandon the now under-water town of St. Thomas when the the other Mormon pioneers voted to abandon the town and move back to St. George, Utah in 1869. Mr. Bonelli and his nine wives stayed in the Virgin River basin and he fathered more children and discovered and named many place names in this area. The Temple, the Haystacks and Mormon Mesa all to this day bear his name. Temple Bar which is another place where boats launch and some people camp is named after Augustus. Where ever one camps at Temple Bar, one always has a view of the lake.

Lake Mead is comprised of five separate basins and Temple Basin is only accessed from the state Arizona highway 93 that runs from Hoover Dan to Kingman, Arizona. It is so peacful out here that when a coyote howls you can almost see the word howl form on it's lips. It's awesome, come and camp!
